Hi I am the anonymous below, thank you for the advice and I will in fact be using it for the future. However, I feel kind of unmotivated because I think about how there are people that were raised to know both English and Chinese and didn’t have to put years of learning into one of these languages (I’m monolingual btw) so I’m thinking why should I? T_T

language is our primary mode of communication. take note that its not THAT easy to juggle two languages at once, even if you’ve grown up doing it. unless youre consistently speaking both, it can be easy to forget even the most basic phrases. for the most part i learned french through classes im taking for school. at first, i didnt speak it at all over summer break, and would have to spend a while reminding myself of simple vocabulary and conjugations. but recognizing the importance of language and translation motivated me. around a billion people speak chinese!
you also aren’t required to put a lot of effort into it every day, its fine to take breaks for a few days at a time or to go slowly. even just fifteen minutes of flashcards can be enough to make sure you’re retaining information. It’s your choice. ^w^ Also, though it depends on the person, it can take a short while (ie. a month) to form a habit. however once youve been putting in that effort to stay consistent, it becomes second nature. That, for example, fifteen minutes, will seem like nothing.
im a little biased but i think that learning anything is amazing. there are so many things to know in the world and its human nature to want to understand.

Hi Do you have any tips or resources for someone trying to learn chinese? complete beginner here and i’m not sure where to start
Replied on: May 28, 2025 at 10:10:55 PM
Hiii of course! I’m a beginner myself and only recently have had sufficient time to sit down and study it, so I won’t have anything super insightful to offer. It’s going to differ from person to person, so what helps me might not be the best for you!!
Overall, there’s plenty of good, free resources available on the internet. When I first started, I picked up a book from the library, but you might prefer to watch a couple (or more) youtube (or other platforms) videos breaking down the basics (such as the tones and structure) to introduce the language before you start to learn it. Youtube channels like Chinese with Ben (study tips, pronunciation, culture, etc) and ShuoshuoChinese (listening practice and important phrases) have been helpful. I’ve used sites like Dong-Chinese and TOFU Learn. Blabla Chinese (videos) and maayot provide stories to practice with (though maayot may be a bit too difficult at first!!)
For apps, LingoDeer helped me to learn very basic sentences. HelloChinese, I’d recommend more, because unlike LingoDeer, its sole focus is Chinese.
Apply it to your interests. This could mean watching shows in Chinese, listening to Chinese music, writing about your interests, or just whatever you find works. Find a way to squeeze what you know into your hobbies and daily life–I tend to write on my work if I have the time at school/beside doodles or talk myself through something (knowing how to explain it on your own is important).
For studying anything, I like to grab a blank piece of paper and write whatever I can remember. Once I’m finished/stumped, I go over any notes or references to see if there’s something I missed. It helps to recall what you’ve learned without anything guiding you/it's on the spot.
